Whenever a seller asks "which first-mile mode is the best deal", we always ask back: can this shipment afford to wait?
Because choosing a first-mile mode is not essentially about unit price, but about the time you can tolerate. The right scenarios for the three main modes are actually quite clear:
| Mode | Transit time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Air | 7–12 days | Urgent restock, high value, small volume |
| Rail | 25–35 days | Regular restock, moderate time sensitivity |
| Sea | 35–50 days | Big-promotion stock, heavy cargo, low value |
A few common judgment mistakes:
- Only looking at unit price, not stockout cost — a week out of stock often loses far more than the freight difference between air and sea;
- Treating sea as the default — sea suits big-promotion stocking, but if you only start sea freight in October for November stock, you will likely miss it;
- Ignoring last-mile delivery — for the same FBA warehouse, booking schedules can differ by several days across last-mile modes; ask about this separately.
Our advice is to first map out your year's restocking rhythm: which SKUs must race the clock and which can go slowly. Choose the mode after that mapping, rather than deciding on the fly for every shipment.
